African statues and sculptures

statues of african twins

The powerful african statues rediscovered by the cubist painter Picasso, are key pieces in the creation process of Africa. Africouleur sometimes fells in love with a few statuettes and purchases them in West Africa. Those sculptures are used to decorate our shop or sold for your homes. Our articles are reproductions of ancient art, with no other purpose than aesthetic.

These statues were created in wood or bronze, sometimes adorned with pearls and cauris shells, even iron nails or other items. They represent people, men and women, stylized, and sculptors have often highlighted the attributes of fertility, manhood and motherhood. Among the most famous fertility dolls are the famous asante "Akuaba" (welcome!) from Ghana. Some statues were carved in pairs (twins or triplets) because africans lend a common soul to twins and the memory of those ancestors continues to be honored after their deaths through these statuettes of wood.

The sculptors are member of the ethnic groups "Baoule", "Bamileke", "Dogon", "Lobi", "Senufo", "Akhan" "Ashanti" and many others from Black Africa.
