African bronze sculptures: elephants, lions, cheetahs...

The bronze figurines were once used to measure weights of gold exported out of Ghana. Ghana was indeed called the "Gold Coast" and a major exporter of gold (then of the famous chocolate too...).

The bronze statues like all objects of bronze (key-rings, boxes, beads ...) that you will find at the store Africouleur are created in Ghana with the technique of lost wax sculpture: a draft is modeled in wax, on which a mold of refractory clay is affixed. The mold is then heated to melt the wax that is evacuated by small channels. The bronze is then melted into the mold emptied. The mold is then broken, pieces are trimmed and patinated to give them their shine.

These art sculptures made of bronze are unfortunately increasingly rare, since copper required for their manufacture is routed en masse to China to produce our technological equipment.
